A simple request by two Los Angeles Times reporters for salary information on public officials in the small city of Bell blossomed into a scandal that has captivated readers nationwide. Reporters Jeff Gottlieb and Ruben Vives broke the story that disclosed Bell’s city manager was being paid $787,637 a year. Come hear them tell “How we got that story” next Thursday evening, Aug. 26, at the Los Angeles Press Club.
When: 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 26
Where: Los Angeles Press Club in the Steve Allen Theater, 4773 Hollywood Blvd. (two blocks west of Vermont), Metro: Red Line, Sunset/Vermont
Cost: Free for members, $15 for nonmembers…refreshments included, of course.

Sounds like a pretty short panel to me.
Could go something like this…
(Question) How did you get the story?
(Answer) We made a request for the information and received it, then we published it.
(Question) Wow that’s amazing, did you guys learn that in journalism school?
(Answer) No it’s called Reporting 101
Good going Jeff and Ruben, good to know that basic reporting skills are still required and used by reporters at the Los Angeles Times.
LA Press Club panel, a bit much in my opinion.
I’ll pass myself, much bigger stories exposed by reporting 101 in LA/SoCal and elsewhere.
Says more about the sorry state of journalism than anything else.
All media hype aside.
Ruben and Jeff, and other media outlets, are doing the community a great service! Bravo for them, the other LA Times staff reporters!
You missed a riveting account of how Jeff and Ruben broke the Bell Story. Great questions from the audience and great answers.
