Veritas Awards 2017
February 23, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pmFree
It was a story waiting to be told and the Los Angeles Press Club jumped on it. For years, Hollywood has used bio pics and other based-on-a-true-story films to tell tales of extraordinary lives and events. Yet, there wasn’t an award specifically recognizing that work, until now.
The Press Club’s Veritas Award, which debuted last February, rewards filmmakers who are journalists at heart, those who look to change the world through probing, investigative, thoughtful movies. The Press Club’s more than 450 members vote on the best film from a list compiled by the club’s board.
Our inaugural winner, Spotlight, had all the elements the club was looking for, a gripping account of how investigative reporters at the Boston Globe uncovered a priest sex-abuse scandal. We weren’t alone in loving the film: It won the Oscar for Best Picture four days after the Press Club gave out its award.
The Press Club’s Veritas ceremony, with red carpet arrivals and Champagne bottles popping, featured a panel discussion with three of the real Boston Globe reporters and editors, Ben Bradlee Jr., Sacha Pfeiffer and Michael Rezendes, as well as screenwriter Josh Singer, who won his own Oscar for penning the script. Their lively discussion about how they got the story, how they got the movie made and the state of investigative journalist today is archived on the Press Club’s website.
With films including Jackie, Birth of a Nation, Deepwater Horizon, Sully, Hacksaw Ridge and The Founder in theaters or about to be released, the 2017 Veritas Award will likely be another extraordinary film and another successful Press Club event.
The ten nominated films will be announced the first week in January with voting to close in the beginning of February. The winner will be announced February 9 and the ceremony held on Thursday, February 23, four days before the Academy Awards.
Will the Press Club’s selection once again predict the Academy winner for best film?
