Invitation to Party with Edna Buchanan

Thursday, June 17, 2004 2:14 PM

WHO: Los Angeles Press Club, Amy Alkon, Cathy Seipp and Emmanuelle Richard invite you to…

WHAT: A party featuring guest-of-honor Edna Buchanan, Pulitzer Prize-winning former Miami Herald police reporter and current mystery novelist.

WHEN: Thursday, June 17, 7-10pm. Edna will speak around 8:30 p.m. for a short Q&A session about her work.

WHERE: The poolside bar at the fabulous and historic Figueroa Hotel downtown (across from the Staples Center), 939 S. Figueroa St. (near 9th St.) Phone: 213-627-8971.

WHY: From Library Journal’s review of “The Corpse Had a Familiar Face,” her collection of crime stories:
Her prose is spare but somehow crammed with detail and description. “If a man is shot for playing the same song on the jukebox too many times, I’ve got to name that tune,” she says. She is outspoken, matter-of-fact, funny, frequently tough. Her best day “is the one where I can write a lead that will cause a reader at his breakfast table to spit up his coffee, clutch at his heart, and shout, `My God, Martha, did you read this?’ ” Her book will make you do just that.
From Edna Buchanan’s opinions about journalism: “To entrust to an editor a story over which you have labored and to which your name and reputation are attached can be like sending your daughter off for an evening with Ted Bundy.”
