Obscenity: How Far is Too Far?

Wednesday, April 07, 2004 5:20 PM

From Janet Jackson’s breast to Howard Stern’s mouth to 5-second delays, the subject of broadcasting standards has erupted. Who decides what is obscene? Who is responsible for what comes over the airwaves? The printing of the attacks and assassinations upon Americans in Iraq is causing controversy. What about self-censorship? Are there important topics out there that editors and managers just don’t buy?

The Press Club hosts an evening on “Censorship in Media,” as a panel of experts discusses recent FCC decisions, free speech, what’s tolerable and what’s indecent and how far is too far.

Please join us at the club headquarters in Hollywood on April 7th, at 7:30 p.m. (wine and appetizers, 6:30 p.m.), for a fascinating panel moderated by radio and TV journalist Jon Beaupre with the participation of First Amendment attorney Stephen F. Rohde; Tim Winter, executive director of the Parents’ Television Council; and Will Lewis, management consultant for KCRW public radio.

Remember, we’re now in our new location, at the corner of Wilcox and Sunset, 6464 Sunset Blvd., 8th floor. RSVP to: [email protected] or call (323)469-8180.
