Broadcast news anchorwoman Ana Garcia has joined the board of the L.A. Press Club by a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors, it was announced by President Mary Moore. She takes the seat which longtime member and former President Dusty Brandel, who recently resigned due to her busy schedule as one of the top reporters in the world of race cars.
“I’m thrilled to be on the board of directors,” says Garcia, who most recently worked at KNBC-TV. “ Los Angeles is a great news town, but being a reporter here can be tough. I want to work with the press club to improve conditions for all working journalists. That means pushing for better sunshine laws that benefit the people not the politicians. I want to be an advocate for journalists and through the press club we can speak with strong, united voice. Yes, even a pushy reporter needs someone to stick up for them every once in a while.
Ana Garcia
Garcia has made a career as a journalist and anchor. At KNBC-TV and KABC-TV she has covered and wrote about some of the biggest stories in California, the country and occasionally on foreign soil. She’s chronicled everything from floods, fires, earthquakes to celebrity divorces, the Oscars and presidential campaigns.
Before L.A., Garcia took the path of other aspiring broadcasters, from market to market. Her tour took her from KIGO-TV in San Francisco, to WPVI-TV in Atlantic City to NJN in Newark, and WEAR-TV in Pensacola, on to WCJB in Gainsesville and WABC in New York City. She also covered diverse social issues for New Jersey Public Television.
Borin in Madrid, Spain, and raised in Queens, New York, Garcia holds a BA from St. Johns University. She is married and has one child. It was the birth of that child, and the lure of politics which make her switch directions recently. Garcia put her skills to work as a Communications Director and Media Strategist for a special election in South Los Angeles.
“Luckily for the Press Club the lure of journalism has brought her back from the world of politics,” says Press Club Exec Director Alex Ben Block. “Ana is deeply committed to doing good work, and reminding journalists to have a social conscience, as well as worry about the bottom line. We are proud she has joined the board. She has already begun expanding our outreach to radio and TV broadcasters.”
Garcia’s creative writing talents have been recognized by Nickelodeon, the cable TV channel. In 2000, she was awarded a prestigious writing fellowship.
