Over the past year, we’ve seen dozens of our colleagues injured, detained and arrested by police in California. Last month, the Los Angeles Press Club’s board of directors unanimously voted to endorse SB-98, a bill that was written to protect journalists from arrest during protests. Endorsing legislation is an extraordinary step that we rarely take. Unfortunately, a new amendment to SB-98 threatens our safety. The Los Angeles Press Club condemns the way officers from the Los Angeles Police Department treated journalists covering the protests at Echo Park on Thursday, March 25. This unconstitutional police conduct involved multiple reporters from local news organizations being detained and zip-tied while simply doing their job. Additional details and accusations are still being investigated. If you read the article in the Los Angeles Times on February 21, 2021 about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you might have been left with the wrong impression regarding the Los Angeles Press Club’s emergency fund. Unfortunately, LAPC was never contacted by the Times for a fact check or a comment, which would have avoided this confusion. It is true that LAPC received a grant of $125,000 from HFPA last year.
