Help Protect Journalists from Arrest in California

Over the past year, we’ve seen dozens of our colleagues injured, detained and arrested by police in California. Last month, the Los Angeles Press Club’s board of directors unanimously voted to endorse SB-98, a bill that was written to protect journalists from arrest during protests. Endorsing legislation is an extraordinary step that we rarely take. Unfortunately, a new amendment to SB-98 threatens our safety. We are pushing back together, part of an unprecedented coalition with at least 15 journalism groups signing the following open letter. Please share this with your…

Joint Letter to Law Enforcement and Local Governments

To Police Chief Moore, Sheriff Villanueva, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Los Angeles City Council, Mayor Garcetti and Southern California Law Enforcement: Los Angeles and other major cities have seen a resurgence in protests against police brutality over the past year, which have resulted in a series of incidents involving police officers and the journalists assigned to cover those demonstrations. Journalists in Southern California and elsewhere have been detained, tackled, sprayed with tear gas, hit with rubber bullets and arrested, preventing them from providing the public with urgently needed…

Emergency Fund for Southern California Journalists Open for Applications

The Los Angeles Press Club is pleased to announce that the Emergency Fund for Southern California journalists is once again open for applications thanks to a generous grant from HFPA, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This time the LA Press Club has been replenished with $50,000. Last year we received $125,000 from the HFPA to distribute to Southland journalists and photographers. The fund is recognizing the hardship put on journalists through the coronavirus pandemic and/or the changing media landscape. Applicants do not need to be members of the Los Angeles…

Initial Statement by the Los Angeles Press Club on LAPD Abuse of Journalists’ Rights

The Los Angeles Press Club condemns the way officers from the Los Angeles Police Department treated journalists covering the protests at Echo Park on Thursday, March 25. This unconstitutional police conduct involved multiple reporters from local news organizations being detained and zip-tied while simply doing their job. Additional details and accusations are still being investigated. We are horrified that this has become a pattern of violating both the United States Constitution and California Constitution, and not only by LAPD but by multiple law enforcement agencies across Southern California. Law enforcement…

A Note on the LAPC Emergency Fund

If you read the article in the Los Angeles Times on February 21, 2021 about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you might have been left with the wrong impression regarding the Los Angeles Press Club’s emergency fund. Unfortunately, LAPC was never contacted by the Times for a fact check or a comment, which would have avoided this confusion. It is true that LAPC received a grant of $125,000 from HFPA last year. With that grant, LAPC (not HFPA) created an emergency fund for journalists in Southern California. The purpose of the…
