Aja Bufka, one of the Press Club’s many foreign correspon- dents, has opened a one-man show of his celebrity photography at the Czech Republic Consulate’s gallery, now through May 19.
Born in Prague, Bufka graduated with honors from the Czech Film and Television Academy, FAMU, and worked as a director and cam- eraman for national television. He also formed a multimedia group under the umbrella of the state- owned ART Centrum.
Bufka’s photo artwork won numerous awards and was pub- lished and exhibited worldwide during the 1970s — and a promis- ing career lay ahead of him. But faced with the situation in his country, he emigrated to the United States as a political refugee in 1981, launching an advertising
firm that landed such names as Sotheby’s, ASDI and Jon Douglas Co.
Jumping again to another successful career, Bufka is a correspondent and photogra- pher for the largest daily news- paper in Prague, MF Dnes. In addition, his video on Programmatic Architecture in Los Angeles, including an interview with Frank Gehry, was broadcast on national tele- vision in Prague.
The show of his photogra- phy, “Celebrity,” is at the Czechfront Gallery, Consultate General of the Czech Republic, 10900 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 1100, Los Angeles. It can be viewed through May 19. For hours, please call (310) 473-0889.
