It’s looking like a June launch for former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan’s new weekly newspaper. The paper, a free politically-oriented tabloid aimed at upscale readers, will be called the Los Angeles Examiner.
Work is currently underway on a prototype issue, which will be used to drum up support from advertisers and investors. The finished product will be available at high-end restaurants and supermarkets and in curbside boxes, and possibly mailed to households in affluent ZIP codes.
Riordan, who lost in last year’s California gubernatorial race, is said to be leaning on his Hollywood connections to attract writers; Billy Crystal will reportedly contribute a piece for the first issue. Hearst published a paper called the Los Angeles Examiner from 1903 to 1961, when it merged with the Herald-Express, another Hearst paper.
