SOME OF OUR BEST JOURNALISM IS NOT IN ENGLISH: Thursday, March 23rd

Thursday, March 23, 2006 1:07 PM

Some 84 percent of Hispanic, Asian and African-American residents of California (close to 17 million) report that they access ethnic media outlets regularly.

With the vast and sprawling series of interlocking communities that has become southern California, it should be no surprise that our media, journalism, and public affairs programming exists in dozens of languages, from the award winning writing of La Opinion to the thousands of readers of publications like the Korean Times in the mid-city area, the Glendale base bilingual Armenian daily Asbarez, and Little Saigon TV News in Orange County, the largest Viet Namese community outside Viet Nam.

Non-English journalists are not simply translating the English language news into their native tongue. Their news agenda, the topics of interests to those various audiences, and the style, outlook and approach may not resemble what English language reporters are writing on a daily basis.

With that in mind, the Los Angeles Press Club has invited journalists from a number of non-English news operations here in Southern California to talk about their common interests and even where they differ with their English language colleagues. Award winning journalist Mark Austin Thomas will moderate the panel.
