BY KAREN OCAMB,
AWARDS DINNER CO-PRODUCER

We are producing our version of “music videos” as a new feature of this year ’s Southern California Journalism Awards, and we need your help. We will be matching pictures of Press Club members and event attendees to music from Pink, Outkast, and of course, Motown.

Please email casual shots of yourself (especially at work with your colleagues), or attending Press Club cocktail parties, seminars or other events, to info@lapressclub.org for possible inclusion in our videos. Make sure to include clear name identifications of each person in the shot.

The Press Club dinner producers are also happy to announce that Magdalena Beltran-del Olmo, widow of the late Times editor and columnist Frank del Olmo, will attend the dinner, which will include a tribute to the important Latino journalist who died suddenly on Feb. 19. Beltran-del Olmo hopes to bring the couple’s daughter, Valentina.

We are also very pleased that voice- over artist Trev Broudy, resuming his career after being brutally attacked in West Hollywood two years ago, will serve as announcer for the evening. Broudy gained national attention when L.A. County District Attorney Steve Cooley chose not to file hate crime charges in what many thought was a gay-bashing case. (See story about Broudy on Page 2 of the 8 Ball.)

Finally, executive director and dinner co-producer Diana Ljungaeus received 506 journalism award sub- missions before the late March deadline, a fiveyear record. We hope this reflects how the Press Club’s prestige continues to grow.

As with every year, the 506 entries of journalistic work published or broadcast in 2003 have been mailed to sister press clubs around the nation, which judge Los Angeles journalists in order to assure impartiality. In exchange, the Press Club Judging Subcommittee, chaired by free- lance journalist and boardmember Michael Collins, selects the winners of journalism awards contests for press clubs representing Houston, the entire state of Ohio and numerous others.
